Choosing Formats for Instagram Videos and Stories
Learn how post type, media type, aspect ratio, container, codec, audio, and device compatibility affect the options returned for a permitted public Instagram link.
Start With Content Type, Not A Preferred Extension
Before thinking about MP4, images, dimensions, or quality, identify what the Instagram URL represents. A standard post, Reel, Story, profile, Explore page, and carousel do not describe the same resource. Choosing the matching route prevents a format problem from actually being a link-type problem.

Public Visibility And Permission Are Separate Checks
Instagram states that posts from public accounts can be seen broadly, while private-account photos and videos are limited to approved followers. That audience distinction helps explain technical availability, but it does not decide ownership or permission. Instagram’s Terms say the service does not claim ownership of a user’s content; the creator retains rights while granting Instagram a licence needed to operate the service.
Open the exact link in a private browser window when appropriate. If it needs authentication, follower approval, a Close Friends relationship, or access to an archive, this site must not be used to work around that boundary.
Understand File Type, Container, And Codec
A filename extension such as `.mp4` identifies a media container, not every technical detail inside it. A container can hold encoded video and audio tracks, and the device must understand both the container and the codecs used for those tracks. MDN’s media documentation makes this distinction explicit: support for a container does not automatically establish support for every codec it could contain.
This site presents compatible options returned by the external provider. It does not transcode the post, select a new codec, manufacture missing audio, turn an image into video, combine carousel slides, or increase resolution. If the page does not display a technical value, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with a common Instagram assumption.

Read The Returned Item Before Choosing It

Keep The Original Framing Unless Your Permitted Use Requires Editing
Vertical, square, and portrait media should not be judged only by pixel count. Aspect ratio describes shape: width divided by height. Preserving the returned file’s ratio avoids accidental stretching and keeps the creator’s framing intact. Cropping is an editing decision, not a download-quality improvement.

These numbers demonstrate how ratios work; they do not claim that the provider will return any listed dimensions. Use the dimensions shown for the current result when they are available.
Choose For Playback, Reference, Or Permitted Editing
- Phone playback: prioritize a returned option that opens reliably, preserves framing, includes expected audio, and does not waste limited storage.
- Offline reference: keep enough visual detail for text or subject matter and record the source URL so context is not lost.
- Presentation: test the exact laptop, browser or player, display connection, orientation, and audio output before the event.
- Permitted editing: use the most suitable returned source and verify that the editor imports both tracks before deleting the original file.
- Carousel documentation: preserve item order in filenames and note when the returned set may be incomplete.
Stories Need Time And Media-Type Checks
A Story URL is time-sensitive and identifies a particular Story item. It may represent a still image or a video, and a sequence may contain several different items. The tool cannot enter an archive, restore an expired Story, sign in as an approved follower, or recover Close Friends content. Submit the direct active item only when it is public and you have permission to keep it.
Interactive Story features—such as polls, questions, countdowns, stickers, links, and replies—are platform interface elements. A returned image or video should not be expected to preserve those interactions as functional controls.
Troubleshoot Format Problems Without Renaming Files

- Confirm orientation and audio.Rotate the device if needed, disable silent mode, and verify that the framing and sound match the intended item.
- Test the destination.Import into the permitted editor or play on the intended presentation device rather than assuming one successful browser playback proves every workflow.
- Name and document it.Include the content type, account or project reference, item order when relevant, and date without exposing unnecessary personal information.
Understand Processing And Retention
The submitted public URL is validated by the application server and checked through an external media provider. The client receives a filtered result, which may be cached briefly; recent successful checks can also appear in local browser history. Do Not Turn A Format Choice Into A Rights Assumption
Being able to view or save a file does not grant permission to repost, remix, publish, sell, or distribute it. Instagram’s copyright guidance notes that downloading content, giving credit, adding a disclaimer, modifying the work, or not intending to profit does not automatically prevent infringement. Keep the use within the permission, licence, exception, or ownership basis that actually applies.
